Delisting
By February 25th, 2021 Square Enix had removed Battlestations: Pacific, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver from Steam. Each store page was updated with the same notice stating that “Square Enix has temporarily removed this title from sale to work on some important updates. Please check back soon!”. The updates in question likely relate to the Games For Windows – LIVE backend that was incorporated into Battlestations and Kane & Lynch.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is the only one of the three to be released on GOG.com where it appears to have been delisted in September of 2021 based on comments by user wrace in the game’s Steam Community forums. Archive.org captures show the delisting took place between July and October. The game’s GOG.com page was then updated with a “Coming Soon” flag and the same notice found on the Steam store page.
Performance and compatibility issues on modern hardware seem to be the cause for Soul Reaver’s delisting on PC. In September of 2020, wrace provided several tools and downloads to address many of these issues. Across several forum threads wrace also related their communication with GOG’s support and legal teams, detailing two separate efforts to bring the game back to sale on PC. Although unconfirmed, it appears that GOG intends to create their own updated version of the game while Square Enix will release a separate update on Steam. It is assumed that neither of these releases will offer extensive work to remaster or upscale the game’s visuals, only addressing the bugs present on modern operating systems.
Although Square Enix promised that the delistings were temporary and to “check back soon”, as of December 2021 no news has been provided on the titles’ status or return to sale on PC.
