Delisting

Epic Games announced on December 14th, 2022 that they would be shutting down online services and servers for several older titles on January 24th, 2023. Alongside the announcement the publisher also began removing the games and accompanying DLC from digital stores.

Starting today, we will begin turning off out-of-date online services and servers for many older games in the Epic family as we move to solely support Epic Online Services with its unified friends system, voice chat features, parental controls, and parental verification features. Most titles will be playable offline, while some will no longer be playable. We apologize to the players affected by these changes.

The following titles will have all online services disabled on January 24, after which players can continue playing single or local multiplayer modes offline:

  • 1000 Tiny Claws
  • Dance Central 1-3
    • Note: Dance Central VR online multiplayer will remain available
  • Green Day: Rock Band
  • Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess
  • Rock Band 1-3
    • Note: Rock Band 4 online multiplayer will remain available
  • The Beatles: Rock Band
  • Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars
  • Unreal Gold
  • Unreal II: The Awakening
  • Unreal Tournament 2003 (not available to buy digitally)
  • Unreal Tournament 2004
  • Unreal Tournament 3
    • Note: We have plans to bring back online features via Epic Online Services in the future.
  • Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition

We have started removing games that were still available from all digital storefronts and are disabling any in-game DLC purchasing as of today. We also removed the Mac and Linux versions of Hatoful Boyfriend and Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star from storefronts today, as well as the mobile title DropMix. Players who already own these titles will still be able to play.

Battle Breakers will shut down and no longer be accessible to players on December 30. We will automatically refund players for any in-game purchases made via Epic direct payment 180 days prior to today. Unreal Tournament (Alpha), Rock Band Blitz, Rock Band Companion app and SingSpace will be shut down and no longer accessible to players on January 24.

Thank you to all of the players and communities who have enjoyed these titles over the years.

Epic Games Announcement – December 14, 2022 [Archive]

Unreal Gold, Unreal II, Unreal Tournament, UT 2003 and 2004, and Unreal Tournament 3 were all removed from sale on Steam on the same day of the announcement. GOG.com was able to publish their own announcement on December 20th giving players just a few days to pick up the titles before they were also delisted there on December 23rd.

We’d like to inform you that due to the publisher’s decision, Unreal Tournament 2004 Editor’s Choice Edition, Unreal 2: The Awakening Special Edition, Unreal Tournament GOTY, and Unreal Gold will be delisted from our catalog on December 23rd (Friday), 2 PM UTC.

For everyone who purchased any of the games prior to delisting, they will remain in their GOG library.

GOG.com Announcement – December 20, 2022 [Archive]

As mentioned in Epic’s announcement, work was underway to bring Unreal Tournament 3 back online in 2023. The release leaked on Steam ahead of an official announcement with the existing game’s page being retitled to Unreal Tournament 3 X. Text on the page promised that the game would be free-to-play and would offer cross-play between Steam, GOG.com, and Epic Games Store players. However, development was stopped on this update and on June 5th, 2023 the changes to the game’s Steam page were reverted back to their original form. Relatedly, the free-to-play alpha release of the 2014 Unreal Tournament sequel was also shut down on January 24th. It is not tracked individually on the site as it did not make it out of this early access state.

Although the games themselves can no longer be purchased digitally, existing owners or those able to acquire physical copies can continue to play solo or local multiplayer modes. With the help of the open source GameSpy replacement, OpenSpy, owners of Unreal, Unreal Tournament, and UT 2003 and 2004 can also continue to play online with others today.

In late October of 2024 the OldUnreal fan community announced that Epic Games had given them the go-ahead to link to the ISO files on Archive.org and include their own fan patches for Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament: GOTY Edition. The company confirmed the news to Polygon in mid-November stating that both games “are available on Archive.org and people are free to independently link to and play these versions”.

About the Game

Unreal Tournament is the original King of the Hill in the frag-or-be-fragged multiplayer gaming world. As the undisputed 1999 Game of the Year, Unreal Tournament grabbed the first person shooter genre by the soiled seat of its pants and knocked it around the room with its never-before-seen graphics, brutal edge-of-your-seat gameplay and a massive and varied feature list that gave gamers more than they ever expected.

  • Novice Mode – This Botmatch competition is where new flak fodder hit boot camp. The Novice setting makes the computer controlled Bots in the game move slower and inflict less damage with their attacks. For those new to first person shooters, this is where teeth are cut, skills are born and addiction begins…
  • Hardcore Mode – Strap on extra armor and have a hand towel next to your mouse pad to wipe away the palm sweat. This mode is only for the pros — all of the bots move like lightning — dodging, jumping and inflicting A LOT more damage with their standard attacks than do their Novice counterparts.
  • Enhanced Bot AI – Bots in Unreal Tournament play as if they’re jacked up on a big old shot of steroids. Their basic deathmatching skills have been virtually perfected, their understanding of the game rules is professorial, their ability to navigate levels is GPS-like, and their threat to your existence is very real.
  • Radio Chatter – Each of the commands at your disposal in the game is accompanied by both a text message on screen AND an audio message. Pleas for back-up or for cover fire are accompanied by pre-recorded sequences communicating your needs. Making this especially cool is the fact that you can hear your opponents’ messages too (even if you’re playing against bots ’cause bots are people, too).
  • New Command Line Options – For the hardcore server masters, this is the dream way to access features and manage a game. Virtually any option you want to tweak can be accessed via the UT command line. Nice and easy!
  • Improved User Interface – Unreal Tournament introduced a better way to see what is happening during a game. By using a unique heads up display (HUD) for each game type (Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Domination, and Assault), the game provides ALL the info needed to play effectively WITHOUT bombarding the player with excessive info.
  • UBrowser – Unreal Tournament’s robust Ubrowser system provides the easiest way to find a game on the Internet and jump into battle. The Ubrowser eliminates the need to download third-party server querying applications. It’s as simple as one-two-frag. By clicking on the “Play Online” button and then selecting a server from the list, the game is on.
  • Spectator Cams – Watching a game of Unreal Tournament has the potential to be almost as much fun as playing it. Thanks to the Spectator Cams, gamers can enter a game and hop around to designated Spectator Cams to view the action on the level. Even cooler, the camera can be “attached” to one of the players in the level to view the action from their perspective. Either way, it’s a cool feature and a great way to learn for people new to the world of online gaming.
  • Jump Mode – Jump twice as high as normal. It’s sorta’ like having a never-ending pair of jumpboots on. The impact these boots have on gameplay is almost indescribable. It changes the dynamic completely.
