The Slightly Mad team announced on Twitter earlier today that the first two Project CARS titles will be delisted from sale later this Fall. Oddly, Project CARS 2 will be delisted first on September 21st while the original Project CARS is set to be removed from sale shortly after, on October 3rd. The team’s brief announcement follows:
Due to expiring car & track licenses, both Project CARS and Project CARS 2 will be delisted from sale in the coming months. The games remain fully playable, and our players will still be able to enjoy all the game features, including multiplayer. We will remove Project CARS from sale on October 3rd and Project CARS 2 on September 21st.
We remain focused on making the best sim racing titles, and as mentioned previously, we look forward to sharing more on the next Slightly Mad project when the time is right.
Slightly Mad Studios announcement – August 22, 2022
The original Project CARS has already been delisted once, disappearing in June of 2020 on console platforms before returning months later. No announcement was ever made but that delisting seems to have been related to Codemasters acquisition of Slightly Mad Studios. Although Codemasters was then acquired by Electronic Arts late in 2020, it seems from this recent announcement that the upcoming delistings really are related to licensed content in the games.
This will leave the poorly-received 2020 release of Project CARS 3 as the only title in the franchise still available digitally. However, it too is expected to be delisted for similar licensing reasons, likely in the next three to five years. Thanks to our own HandMaskTar for pointing out the news. I’ve added the date to the Watch List calendar and we’ll have updated pages on the site later.
