Guido Out announced on January 13, 2023 that The Royal Game of Ur would be delisted from Steam on January 20, 2023, due to the expiration of the game’s music rights. Guido’s announcement follows:

Dear players of the Royal Game of Ur,

Let me start off with the important news; this version of the Royal Game of Ur will be retired from the Steam Store on January 20th 2023. Because of a limit on my music license I can no longer sell the game on Steam, but if you already own the game, you can keep on playing!

It has been 4 years since I got to know the classic game of Ur, and developed this version of the game as a passion project. I have been blown away by the positive response to my version of the game, and I have learned a lot about game development and game publishing since. All of your comments and posts about the game were very much appreciated.

Thousands of rounds of Ur have been played by all of you, in countries all across the world. I am thankful for each and every one of you, no matter if you’ve played 5 minutes or 50 hours (yes, I am as amazed as you are that that’s a real number) or anywhere in between.

I am currently developing a new puzzle game in which I will apply many of the lessons I’ve learned (Sorry about your GPU) so if you’d like to see what I can come up with on my own keep an eye on my developer account.

Thanks for playing!

About the Game

The Royal Game of Ur is an ancient board game where players try to race all of their tokens across the board first. Four four-sided dice determine the allowed movement, and opposing pieces are removed from the board when landed upon. This combination of luck and strategy made this game one of the most popular board games in the world 3000 years ago, and it would form the basis for other token racing games like Backgammon that are still being played by millions today.
