[UPDATE] Well that didn’t even take until Friday. Gematsu posted to Twitter that according to a Microsoft spokesperson the site heard from “this message was posted in error and we can confirm the Xbox 360 marketplace will not close in May 2023”. Our original post from earlier tonight follows.
The news that broke earlier this week detailing dozens of Xbox 360 games leaving the marketplace by February 7th seems to be just the beginning. Reset Era has pointed out the Xbox Support page heading below that states bluntly, “we encourage you to purchase any 360 games or DLC by May 2023” as the Xbox 360 Marketplace will be shut down over the next year.
The article itself links to the same support page detailing February’s delistings that we’ve been looking at since Monday so the byline about May of 2023 may have just slipped out ahead of time. The messaging is also unclear as it states the marketplace will be shut down over the next year but also encourages making purchases by May.
Hopefully by Friday afternoon we get some clarification from a rattled Xbox press team but for the time being it seems best to start picking up any games, DLC, or add-ons for Xbox 360 you’ve been sitting on.
Please note, although we don’t have more details yet, these changes are likely related only to the marketplace on the Xbox 360. Many titles and pieces of content will still be available through the store on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles but there’s currently no way to know for sure what will or won’t be left behind.
