Call of Duty Online, China’s PC exclusive, free-to-play entry in the series, is shutting down at the end of August. In an official announcement posted to the game’s homepage on May 31st, the team laid out a timeline leading up to the termination of the game.
- May 31, 2021 – End of in-game purchases
- June 01, 2021 – End of registration for new players
- Aug 31, 2021 – Server and Service Shutdown
To compensate current players the team is offering anyone with a registered account several in-game items for Call of Duty Mobile. Although the Google Translated announcement only vaguely implies it, Niko Partners’ games analyst, Daniel Ahmad, puts it more bluntly; “declining revenue and lack of renewal from Activision” are behind the decision to shut the game down. I’ve added the date to the Watch List calendar and will have a page up on the site soon.
