Poptropica’s official Instagram and X (Twitter) accounts were updated hours after the supposed shutdown announcement stating that the game would not close on the 29th, and have claimed the Discord account that posted it did not belong to them. Memberships for the game will remain free for all players throughout the month of December. The original news post follows:
The team at Poptropica announced in the Poptropica Help Chat Discord earlier today that their long-running children’s MMO would be discontinued on December 29, 2023. The full shutdown announcement follows:
Dear Poptropicans,
It is after considerable deliberation that I have decided to share this message. As many of you have noticed, some things about the game have been looking different recently, such as the removal of memberships and other sources of income. Due to recent layoffs, the reallocation of resources, lack of revenue, and other financial barriers, Poptropica will be discontinued after December 29, 2023. Poptropica has been a virtual home for millions of players, providing a safe and imaginative space to embark on quests, solve mysteries, and connect with friends from around the globe. The memories created within its colorful and diverse islands are truly special, and it warms our hearts to know that Poptropica has been a source of joy and inspiration for so many.
Over the years, Poptropica has been more than just a game-it’s been a community of explorers, a platform for creativity, and a space for learning. We’ve witnessed your incredible talent in creating Poptropican characters, your determination in conquering challenging islands, and your kindness in helping fellow players along the way. Throughout the past two years, members of the staff at Poptropica reorganized as developer Suit Up Games, which was spun off from StoryArc in January 2022 to develop games for the Roblox platform. Prior to the announcement, Poptropica’s premium memberships were quietly discontinued on December 2nd and all of its content were made free to all players four days later.
While presently unconfirmed, the Steam and mobile releases are likely to shut down alongside the official website. In the meantime, the game has been added to our Watch List calendar and we’ll have a page up later.
