Super Bomberman R Online launched as a free-to-play battle royale title exclusively on Google Stadia in 2020 before making its way to consoles and PC just over a year ago. Now due to “various circumstances” Konami has announced this morning that the game will be shutting down at the end of the year on December 1st. In-game purchases of Bomber Coins and Premium Packs also ended with the announcement and Konami suggests that no refunds will be given for unused purchases. The full statement follows:
Thank you for playing SUPER BOMBERMAN R ONLINE.
This service has continued to operate with the support of many users since its launch in May 2021, but due to various circumstances, we have decided to terminate the service on all platforms on December 1, 2022 at 01:00:00 (UTC).
The sale of Bomber Coins and Premium Packs will end at 01:00:00 UTC on June 1, 2022.
We ask that all unused Bomber Coins be used before the end of the service.
We hope that you will enjoy the game until the end of the service. The “Bomberman” series is moving forward with new projects.
Konami Announcement, June 01, 2022
We hope to be able to inform you of this project soon.
Thank you for your continued support of the “Bomberman” series.
Based solely on Steam data, the game has seen fewer than 500 daily active players since just three months after its launch, and likely far fewer microtransaction purchases. Even with cross-platform play, full 64-player matches are likely harder and harder to find as player numbers have dwindled. Add that on top of the non-trivial costs of maintaining the game on five platforms and the decision to shut things down seems obvious.
For anyone looking to try out the game or pick up its 10 exclusive Achievements/Trophies, the game will likely remain available on all platforms until December. You can grab it on Stadia, Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One.
I’ve added the date to the Watch List calendar and will have a page up on the site later. Thanks to Michael Huniu for pointing out the news this morning.
